Impact story · Chikkanahalli, Channapatna taluk

Sunil C V

Slip fielder · Bengaluru Renegades, KWPL Season 3 champions

Finding freedom and purpose through wheelchair cricket

After a fall changed Sunil's life sixteen years ago, days felt heavy and far from sport. Discovering DMSA and wheelchair cricket on Facebook opened a path to teamwork, a championship and renewed confidence.

Told in Sunil’s own words

Chapter 1 · Roots

A childhood rooted in play

Sunil grew up in Chikkanahalli village racing bicycles, swimming, and playing marbles, gilli-danda, spinning tops and cricket with friends.

On 10 November 2010, while climbing a mango tree to collect leaves for a relative's wedding, Sunil fell and broke the back. Afterwards, watching others run and play from the sidelines brought a deep, lingering sorrow. Life without sport felt frustrating and lonely.

When we played cricket and won and shared our photos on social media, their perspective changed completely.

Chapter 2 · Turning point

Discovering cricket on Facebook

Sunil found DMSA and wheelchair cricket on Facebook, called Dileep sir, and was invited to Shalini Ground in Jayanagar, Bengaluru.

Hearing that invitation was the first real excitement in years after so long on the sidelines.

With DMSA

How DMSA stood with Sunil

At Shalini Ground, DMSA's mentors gave Sunil a solid foundation and a welcoming community: Sagar taught wheelchair movement, Shivanna guided batting, and Coach Kevin trained bowling, batting and manoeuvring on the field.

What DMSA provided

  • Wheelchair movement techniques, taught by Sagar
  • Batting guidance from Shivanna
  • Bowling, batting and mobility training from Coach Kevin

Chapter 3 · On the field

Championship glory

Playing slip for the Bengaluru Renegades, Sunil won the KWPL Season 3 final — the proudest moment of the journey.

Nervous in front of the crowd, Sunil followed the coach's and captain's advice to watch only the ball, and earned the captain's praise for sharp fielding under pressure.

That moment winning the KWPL final was the most beautiful moment in our lives, something we had never experienced before.

Chapter 4 · Life today

Beyond the boundary

Life off the field

Neighbours once believed a person with a disability could achieve nothing. After Sunil shared photos of cricket and winning moments, attitudes shifted from doubt to deep respect — and Sunil's confidence grew with them.

Work and independence

Health problems stopped Sunil finishing the final year of a degree, and later meant stepping away from a job. Sunil is now looking for new work, determined to build financial independence.

Chapter 5 · Road ahead

Dreams of sport and independence

Sunil wants to become an accomplished sportsman across as many disability sports as possible — and to open a business or shop to settle down securely.
